Red Brand

Red

Digital Cinema Camera Company was started in 1999 by the founder of Oakley sunglasses, Jim Jannard. In 2008 Red introduced a concept they called DSMC or Digital Still and Motion Camera system. This DSMC concept revolved around offering camera components that were interchangeable and user configurable. This allows users to keep the main camera system, but upgrade the external components, i.e. handle grips, external monitors, etc.

Since the introduction of the digital video camera the professional world has seen many changes. Companies like Sony, Panasonic, and Canon all stuck to similar camera production styles offering slight differences from each other. Yet, when Jim Jannard of Oakley fame introduced the Red One Camera to the digital cinema camera market, professional buzz went through the roof.

The Red cameras record in the “REDCODE RAW,” codec. Red cameras were the first to allow high bit sensor information to be recorded to, small, light-weight, CF cards, small Hard Drives, or Solid  State Drives; unlike other systems which recorded to large external storage systems. Red cameras, especially the new Red Scarlet X, allows small businesses and independent filmmakers to record in resolution qualities (up to 4K) of high end TV and Motion Pictures with a relatively smaller budget. Even large Hollywood filmmakers have caught onto the Red Camera buzz. Peter Jackson decided to shoot the up incoming movie, “The Hobbit,” on the Red Epic (a larger version of the Red Scarlet X), and the Academy Award-Nominated film “District 9,” which Jackson produced, was also shot entirely on the Red. Steven Soderbergh, shoot his epic film, “Che,” all on the Red and had this to say,

"this is the camera I've been waiting for my whole career: jaw-dropping imagery recorded on board a camera light enough to hold with one hand. I don't know how Jim and the Red team did it—and they won't tell me—but I know this: Red is going to change everything." - Red News.
